Atlantic Avenue Gets a Colorful Makeover: Murals Under the BQE Welcome All to Brooklyn

Brooklyn’s Atlantic Avenue has a fresh new look, thanks to a community-driven art project that’s transformed the underpass beneath the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway into a vibrant gateway to Brooklyn Bridge Park. Spearheaded by the Atlantic Avenue Business Improvement District (BID), the initiative has turned a once-overlooked space into a celebration of local history, resilience, and creativity.

Funded by a $60,000 Public Realm Grant from NYC’s Department of Small Business Services, the BID partnered with Thrive Collective and NYC DOT Art to ensure the murals reflected genuine community input. Through conversations with residents, several key themes emerged: reconnecting neighborhoods with the waterfront, honoring the area’s complex development history, and celebrating the diverse communities that call Atlantic Avenue home.

The BQE’s construction in the 1940s dramatically reshaped Brooklyn, cutting off Atlantic Avenue from the waterfront and displacing thousands. Rather than ignoring this history, the murals embrace it — using art to spark dialogue about renewal and community strength.

Seven artists were selected to bring this vision to life. On the south wall, six murals explore maritime heritage, local businesses, and recreational life, including “Dockyards” by Will Power, “Industrious” by Vince Ballentine, and “Biodiverse” by Peach Tao. On the north wall, “The Avenue” by Marissa Molina highlights community voices in urban planning and celebrates the preservation of Atlantic Avenue’s historic districts.

Local leaders and organizations have praised the project. Kelly Carroll, Executive Director of the Atlantic Avenue BID, called it “a venerable gateway to Brooklyn’s Atlantic Avenue,” noting its role in boosting foot traffic and improving safety. Borough President Antonio Reynoso emphasized the importance of honoring communities affected by the BQE’s construction, while Lara Birnback of the Brooklyn Heights Association applauded the murals for acknowledging past losses and celebrating Brooklyn’s enduring vibrancy.

Beyond its artistic value, the project is a win for the neighborhood. Public art and improved lighting enhance the corridor’s appeal, support local businesses, and contribute to rising property values. It’s a clear example of how thoughtful community investment can create lasting impact.

The ribbon-cutting ceremony in July marked the completion of a project rooted in collaboration, history, and hope. As Brooklyn continues to grow, the Atlantic Avenue murals show how creativity and community can come together to shape a brighter future.
