Brooklyn’s Industry City Wants To Grow

Industry City (formerly known as Bush Terminal) is a historic intermodal manufacturing, warehousing, shipping complex  located on the Upper New York Bay (Upper Bay) waterfront in Sunset Park, Brooklyn, NY.

Industry City, once desolate rows of huge old forgotten buildings has been transformed into a magnetic and vibrant center for food, shopping, innovation and the home of hundreds of companies big and small growing their businesses.

Industry City wants to grow and evolve it’s 35 acre, 6M square feet in 16 buildings of space and invest another $1B into new uses which include large retail stores, 2 hotels and academic space. The first step in a 10 year plan is to get a zoning change.

The certified rezoning from The Department of City Planning will come before the community board this month or next.

One issue that’s being raised by the community is the type of jobs that Industry City plans to create.  Local residents of Sunset park want jobs that provide a step ladder that helps people to get a leg up.

Andrew Kimball, CEO of Industry City has responded by saying that the new data with a more in depth look at the types of jobs to be created will be published soon.

A recent update indicates that a deal has been reached with Industry City that would let the owners begin the process to rezone it.

The partnership of landlords that control Industry City including Jamestown, Belvedere Capital and Angelo Gordon will set aside hundreds of thousands of square feet for manufacturing, create a vocational school, help to beautify the street scape of the area and make other concessions to allow the rezoning to proceed.

Specifically, the deal will require Industry City to reserve up to 900,000 square feet for manufacturing and lease a portion of that space to a non profit (not determined yet) focused on creating local jobs.
