Brooklyn, NY Neighborhood Rezoning Gains Support

Mayor Adams proposed Atlantic Avenue rezoning in Crown Heights and Bedford Stuyvesant have the support of local Councilmembers.

The upzoning is part of the mayor's “Moonshot” goal of 500,000 new housing units. The “Get Stuff Done” plan is meant to speed up the land use planning process and make it less expensive for developers to build with changes to environmental review rules and Department of Building permitting requirements.

Adams says “We need more housing. We don't have enough housing to meet the need that we have”. “Safe, stable, affordable housing cannot be a privilege. It is the foundation of a prosperous society”.

The Atlantic Avenue mixed use rezoning plan will be located between Vanderbilt and Nostrand Avenues. Currently zoned M-1 for light manufacturing, the rezoning would increase available density to create a working neighborhood plan. The plan would also bring commercial and industrial jobs and infrastructure improvements to Crown Heights and to Bedford Stuyvesant.

According to Councilmember Crystal Hudson who represents the proposed rezoning area, “I am excited for the opportunity to engage our neighbors in the envisioning what this corridor could be”.

According to City Planning Director Dan Garodnick “We have worked on this issue carefully and thoughtfully in a way that we believe we can do it in partnership with the local councilmembers”. “We want to do this in a way where the community is seeing these sorts of changes, not feeling threatened by them but rather seeing them as an opportunity to re imagine a neighborhood, to do it in a way that respects community interests and creates new opportunities for the people that are there and who may be there in the future”.
