Brooklyn’s Dumbo and Vinegar Hill

In this blog we will combine the 2 incredible waterfront Brooklyn NY neighborhoods of Dumbo and Vinegar Hill. While each neighborhood being very distinct, they are very close and flow into one another.

Dumbo is short for Down Under The Manhattan bridge Overpass and is split into two sections, one located between the Manhattan and Brooklyn Bridges and another that continues east to the Manhattan Bridge to the Vinegar Hill area. Neighborhood boundaries are Brooklyn Bridge Park to the North, The Brooklyn Bridge to the West, Brooklyn Heights to the South and Vinegar Hill to the East.

The Dumbo Historic District is bounded by John Street to the North, York Street to the South, Main Street to the West and Bridge Street to the West. The Dumbo Historic District, a historic industrial complex and National Historic District was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2000. The Historic District consists of 95 contributing buildings including Benjamin Moore & Co (paint), Arbuckle Brothers (coffee and spice), Robert Gair (paper boxes), E.W. Bliss Machinery and Brillo (soap pads). The district includes the earliest large scale reinforced concrete factory buildings in America.

Dumbo has the highest concentration of technology firms by neighborhood.

Vinegar Hill spans from the East River Waterfront to Front Street and from The Brooklyn Navy Yard to Bridge Street.

Most of Vinegar Hill residential properties consist of Federal Style and Greek style homes. The Vinegar Hill area includes the Vinegar Hill Historic District.

Vinegar Hill isolated and unassuming as decades past has maintained an old town feel and remains quaint as though time has stopped.

What you will find in Dumbo and Vinegar Hill are spectacular waterfront views, new art galleries, independent shops, avante garde bookstores, great restaurants and the wonderful Brooklyn Bridge Park, a gorgeous waterfront green space with restaurants, bars, picnic areas, gardens and dog runs.

Subway service into Manhattan from Vinegar Hill and Dumbo consists of the F train at York Street and the A & C trains at High Street.

The NYC Ferry into Manhattan stops at Fulton Ferry in Dumbo.

Sweetgreen located at 50 Washington Street, serving Salad, Salad and Salad.

The River Café located at 1 Water Street, Landmark waterfront eatery with stunning views of Manhattan, serving New American food.

The Osprey located at 60 Furman Street at the 1 Hotel, serving rotisserie dishes and other upscale American fare.

Gran Electrica located at 5 Front Street, serving fresh, light Mexican food. Nice backyard when weather permits.

Dumbo and Vinegar Hill have some good bars. They are:

68 Jay Street Bar located at 68 Jay Street, a neighborhood watering hole.

Olympia Wine Bar located at 54 Jay Street.

Vinegar Hill House located at 72 Hudson Ave. They have a good wine list.

Brooklyn Bridge Garden bar located at 12 Furman Street with great views and serving great drinks.

Al Mar located at 111 Front Street, an Italian trattoria with an extensive drink menu.

Amarachi located at 189 Bridge Street, an Afro Caribbean Bar with a top shelf Happy Hour.

The Bridges located at 66 Water Street, a neighborhood sports bar.
