Midwood, Brooklyn NY is known to be home to many religious Jewish families, but steadily growing in popularity for all young families in search of an affordable housing alternative to other expensive Brooklyn neighborhoods. Besides the lifelong New Yorkers who moved to Midwood the neighborhood has a mix of recently arrived immigrants including Chinese, Turkish, Pakistani, Polish, Russian and others.

Midwood is located in South Central Brooklyn. Midwood is bordered by Avenue P & Kings highway on the South, Avenue I and The Brooklyn College campus to the North, Nostrand Avenue to the East and Coney Island Avenue, parts of Mc Donald Avenue and Ocean Parkway to the West.

Midwood is a home for Brooklyn College, a senior university of the City University of New York.

For one family homes, a 6 room, 3 bedroom, 1.5 bath, 1,200 square foot property is asking $639,000, a 7 room, 3 bedroom, 2 bath, 2,000 square foot property is asking $799,000, a 10 room, 3 bedroom, 2 bath, 1,680 square foot property is asking $850,000, an 8 room, 3 bedroom, 2 bath property is asking $950,000, a 7 room, 3 bedroom, 3.5 bath, 1,700 square foot property is asking $1.2M, a 9 room, 5 bedroom, 4 bath, 1,950 square foot property is asking $1.498M, an 8 room, 3 bedroom, 1.5 bath, 1,880 square foot property is asking $1.849M and a 12 room, 4 bedroom, 2.5 bath, 2,796 square foot property is asking $2.599M.

For 2 family homes, a 3 bedroom, 2 bath, 1,566 square foot property is asking $899,000, for a 12 room, 7 bedroom, 3+ bath renovated property the asking price is $1.550M, for a 14 room, 6 bedroom, 2+ bath, detached home on a 42x100 lot the asking price is $1.675M.

For a 3 family house with 6 bedrooms, 3+ baths, 2,660 square feet in size, the asking price is $999,000.

Pricing for Co-op apartments, a 2 room, 1 full bath, 510 square foot studio unit the asking price is $145,000. This unit needs work. Another 2 room, 1 bath L shaped studio also needing work is asking $179,000.

A 1 bedroom, 1 bath, 800 square foot unit is asking $235,000, a 1 bedroom, 1 bath, 900 square foot unit is asking $299,000 and a 1 bedroom, 1 bath, 950 square foot unit is also asking $299,000.

A 2 bedroom, 1 bath, 800 square foot unit is asking $205,000, a 2 bedroom, 1 bath, 900 square foot unit is asking $249,000, a 2 bedroom, 1 bath, 850 square foot unit is asking $299,000, a 2 bedroom, 1 bath, 800 square foot unit is asking $349,000, a 2 bedroom, 1 bath, 1,000 square foot unit is asking $429,000, a 7 room, 2 bedroom, 2 bath unit is asking $595,000, a 5 room, 2 bedroom, 2 bath unit is asking $699,000 and on the high end, a 4 bedroom, 2 bath, 2,000 square foot penthouse unit is asking $1.199M.

Pricing for Condominiums are for a 2 bedroom, 1 bath, 807 square foot unit is asking $525,000, for a 2 bedroom, 2 bath, 957 square foot unit, asking is $635,000, for a 2 bedroom, 2 bath, 1,063 square foot unit, asking is $710,000, for a 3 bedroom, 2 bath, 1,214 square foot unit, asking is $860,000 and for a 4 bedroom, 3 bath, 1,500 square foot unit, asking is $989,000.

Some of the latest new development projects coming to Midwood are:

ZHL Group is planning an 8 story mixed use building at 1673 Ocean Avenue at Avenue M. The building will be 39,830 square feet in total with 700 square feet for a Medical Facility and 32,600 square feet for residential rentals. Amenities offered are parking, bike storage, fitness center, doorman, conference room and recreation space on the ground floor and rooftop. The approximate size of the 49 residential apartments is 665 square feet apiece. Zproekt will design the building.

SHoP Architects will be designing a 10 story mixed use project located at 1508 Coney Island Avenue, off Avenue L. The building will be 180,270 square feet with 63, 340 square feet for commercial office use and 84,000 square feet for a Medical Facility. There will be parking for 267 vehicles. Baruch Singer is handling the development.

Subway service into Manhattan from Midwood consists of the F train on Mc Donald Avenue & Bay Parkway and the B & Q trains at Kings Highway and East 15th Street.

There are many good public schools in Midwood. They are:

Edward R. Murrow High School located at 1600 Avenue L.

P.S. 193 Gil Hodges School located at 2515 Avenue L, serving grades 1-5, OK, PK and SE.

P.S. 199 Frederick Wachtel School located at 1100 Elm Avenue, serving grades 1-5, OK, PK and SE.

I.S. 381 located at 1599 East 22nd Street, serving grades 6-8.

One of my favorites is Di Fara Pizzaria located at 1424 Avenue J. Each pizza is handmade by Mr. Domenico DeMarco. Family owned and operated, according to the late Anthony Bourdain “ legendary” “ the best of the best”. I agree whole heartedly.

Michael’s of Brooklyn, family owned nsince 1964,  located at 2929 Avenue R. Serving great Italian cuisine from old family recipes for 3 generations.

Taci Beyti located at 1953-1955 Coney Island Avenue off Avenue P. Serving Turkish cuisine.

Mitoushi Japanese Restaurant located at 1221 Quentin Road, serving Japanese and Sushi.

Moldova located at 1827 Coney Island Avenue, serving Eastern European cuisine.

Memo Shish Kebob located at 1821 Kings Highway is one of my go to restaurants for Middle Eastern and Turkish cuisine serving delicious gyros, kebobs, falafel, homemade soups and much more all reasonably priced.

The main shopping corridors in Midwood are Avenue J, Avenue M.and Kings Highway.
